Blanco Niño’s Lightly Salted, Blue Corn and Chilli & Lime tortilla chips have earned 5 stars from Great Taste Awards 2022. Great Taste is the world’s largest and most prestigious food and drink accreditation schemes. So, can you imagine the looks on our faces when we learned that Blanco Niño’s Lightly Salted and Blue Corn tortilla chips both earned two stars. Our Chilli & Lime also received one star.
We’re committed to making the most authentic-tasting chips by using a traditional 3-day cooking process called nixtamalization. The judges picked up on this as a differentiating factor, which we’re thrilled about.
Our founder, Phil said: “It is a huge honour to have every one of Blanco Niño’s retail tortilla chip flavours earning stars at the Great Taste Awards, especially as it’s our first time ever entering. Knowing the rigorous judging process behind these awards and rarity of getting even one star has us all over the moon. It is a great recognition of the daily trojan efforts of all the Blanco Niño team and our amazing partners. Really looking forward to sharing our tortilla chips with an even wider audience of customers over the coming month.”
For these chips, we source Celestún salt from a social enterprise in the Yucatán – home to ancient Mayan salt-flats. The judges commented that “They look beautiful and enticing. Little air bubbles that have been captured and set through cooking. A crisp and a crunch that is perfection. Non greasy, cracking corn flavour – full of authenticity. They’ve been left unsullied by flavourings – just simple salt, well executed and balanced. Tremendous flavour.”
For these chips, the amaranth is sourced from a small heritage farmer located in Milpa Alta, which overlooks Lake Texcoco. Together, blue corn and amaranth have a unique, subtly sweet and earthy flavour. The judges commented that these chips had “A superb texture and mouthfeel, truly wonderful. Perfectly salted and a joy to eat, and we feel that this is a great example of a traditional tortilla chip, they are light, delicate and so very well produced, and we applaud your process and creation here.”
Nestled in the shadow of a dormant volcano, it is the vibrant city and landscape of Puebla which inspired this tortilla chip flavour. Commonplace on these colour-soaked streets is the marriage of stinging chilli heat and sharp citrus fruit flavours. The judges described the chips as “Artisan-looking chips with a lovely rich golden colour. Moreish crunch! Plenty of rich creamy corn flavour and the chilli and lime has been lightly added keeping this tortilla chip really classy.”
